Professor Moulton is the leading Lewis and Clark scholar. He is the editor of the new thirteen-volume edition of the Journals of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, begun in 1983 under the sponsorship of the Center for Great Plains Studies and the American Philosophical Society, with support from the National Endowment for the Humanities. It is published by the University of Nebraska Press. He has also edited a one-volume compendium, The Lewis and Clark Journals: An American Epic of Discovery (Lincoln: University of Nebraska Press, 2003).

Meanwhile, he has published The Papers of Chief John Ross (2 vols., University of Oklahoma Press, 1985), and co-authored Mapping the North American Plains: Essays in the History of Cartography (University of Oklahoma Press, 1987).
