Ahati Nerasa Neru Toure is Yoruba and traces his ancestry to Ile Ife, the holy city of the Yoruba people, located in what is now Nigeria, West Africa. He was born and raised in New York City and upstate New York. Both his father's and his mother's grandfathers were enslaved in the southern United States. He is a doctoral student in history at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. His research interest is the African experience in the United States, especially as it relates to 19th century and 20th century Pan African nationalist thought and movements.
