This map, compiled in 1803 by Nicholas King from the most reliable current knowledge about the Northwest, showed the Rocky Mountains that Lewis and Clark expected to encounter as they started up the Missouri River in May of 1804. By the time they left Fort Mandan a year later they had quite a different picture of the Rockies.
