Mary Malloy is the author of four books on the Northwest Coast Maritime fur trade, including Souvenirs of the Fur Trade: Northwest Coast Indian Art and Artifacts Collected by American Mariners, and Devil on the Deep Blue Sea: The Notorious Career of Captain Samuel Hill of Boston. Her association with Lewis and Clark began—nominally at least—back in her middle-school days in her home town of Spokane, Washington, where she attended Sacajawea Junior High and Lewis and Clark High School. She earned her Ph.D. at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island.

Currently she teaches Maritime History at the Sea Education Association in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, and Museum Studies at Harvard University.
